Something to Love

Thief’s Odyssey

P.T. Hylton · Feb 16, 2015 ·

Noted writer of words and stories John L. Monk has published a new novel called THIEF’S ODYSSEY. I read an advance copy, and I think it’s his best yet. It’s about a master thief whose life is thrown into turmoil when his past catches up with him.

thief_blogIt’s fun. It’s exciting. It’s well researched. If I were the blurbing type, I might say something like: “THIEF’S ODYSSEY will steal your heart!” or “John L. Monk picked the lock to my book-loving mind and heart with this one!” or Unputdownable!!!”

But I’m not, so I’ll just give you the link and recommend you check it out at your earliest convenience. Which, let’s be honest, is now. Like whatever else you’re doing is unputdownable.

Click here to check it out on Amazon. Cool cover, too.

Fun fact: ‘Thief’ and ‘odyssey’ are two words I cannot spell write on the first try. So it took me way longer than it should have to write this post. But you’re worth it, reader. You’re worth it.

Who Wins the Scene?

P.T. Hylton · Dec 3, 2014 ·

Every Frame a Painting is one of my favorite YouTube channels. Tony Zhou breaks down filmmaking techniques in ways even us non-filmmaker types can understand. And it’s fascinating.

Here’s a short example called ‘Who Wins the Scene?’

I’ve been thinking about how I can apply some of the visual techniques he discusses to my fiction. This week, whenever I get bogged down in the plot details or the minutia of my writing, I’ve been asking myself ‘Who is going to win this scene, and how am I going to show it?’

Anyway, Every Frame a Painting is wonderful and you should subscribe to the channel.

Buy the Ticket, Take the RIDE

P.T. Hylton · Oct 20, 2014 ·

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you know I’m a big fan of John L. Monk’s book KICK.

The sequel, FOOL’S RIDE, is out now. I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of the book, and I can tell you this one’s even better than KICK. It’s a bit darker, a touch more thought provoking, and just as much fun.

Here’s the offical blurb:

Dan Jenkins is back, body hopping a scumbag at a time in his quest for the perfect ride. He doesn’t need much. Premium cable TV, good books, a well-stocked pantry, and he’s set. But the Great Whomever has other plans.

After six months waiting in limbo, Dan catches a ride as a horror novelist whose gruesome stories aren’t just fiction. Later, he hunts a man who’s escaped justice for far too long. Then, in his greatest challenge yet, he strays too deeply into the lives of the people he loves: his most foolish ride of all.

BookTube

P.T. Hylton · Oct 8, 2014 ·

In the last couple months, I’ve discovered a thriving community of Science Fiction and Fantasy reviewers on YouTube.

I know, BookTube is not a new thing. But I’m late to every party. It’s my gift and my curse.

It’s theoretically possible some of you are as uncool as I was, and you aren’t currently watching BookTube videos. The time has come to remedy that situation.

Here are five of my favorite BookTube channels. This is not a complete list by any means, but it should be enough to get you started in the SFF BookTube world. I’ll post links to some other quality channels in the near future.

In no particular order:

Let’s Read posts witty and thoughtful sci-fi and fantasy reviews (such as the one below). Great production quality and great content.

Here’s another good one from Let’s Read: a heartfelt letter to books. [Read more…] about BookTube
