March Weird Question Winners!

P.T. Hylton · Mar 30, 2014 ·

Here are the winners from the March Weird Question posts.

The Five-Second Time Machine -
Jerrod for his comment “I would/did tell hitler that the key to winning WWII was to fight a two front war. As you know from this timeline’s history books, it was the reason why hitler lost the war. You can thank me from saving all of you from the original time line. Plus now we have pet rocks.”

The (Extreme) Witness Protection Program –
Papa for his comment “You didn’t say whether I could go outdoors in Norton, Kansas, which would make a huge difference. If I had to stay in the house all day, no way. I checked out Disc Golf Course Review to see if there is a disc golf course in Norton, and, there actually is a pretty decent one (which automatically cancels its distinction as the “most boring town in America’) In the review of the course, I found this comment, which is quite hilarious, considering the context: “If you like a heavily guarded pin then hole 13 is right up your alley.” The person who wrote that doesn’t know the half of it, lol.

All in all though, I’m picking the armed guard and greater freedom.”

Who Would You Save? –
damacleod for his comment “Easy choice. In a time pressured situation I’d definitely go with my gut instinct and save the one nice guy.”

An Intriguingly Boring Job Offer –
Steve for his comment : “You come up with some odd ones.
I might be tempted. ‘Working’ half the hours for double the money would give me more options for my free time. But it would be boring. I’d run out of stuff to think about. I guess some people have really tedious jobs, but mine at least has variety and I can talk to people. But the time and money are valuable too.”
Note: Steve would have won three of these, but I figured he probably didn’t want 4 copies of the same book. 🙂

Winners, drop me a line at pt@pthylton.com and let me know if you want an epub or kindle version of Regulation 19, and I will email it right over.

I am working on a different prize for April, so stay tuned! Thanks to everyone who participated!

An Intriguingly Boring Job Offer

P.T. Hylton · Mar 19, 2014 ·

You are approached by a head-hunting organization and offered a new job. This job only requires you to work Monday-Friday 10am to 2pm. The benefits are comparable to your current job, and they are offering you twice your current annual salary.

Your only duty will be to sit in a windowless 7ft by 7ft room. You will sit doing nothing for four hours a day. The room is empty expect for a standard office chair. You may not bring anything into the room with you. No books. No cell phone. Nothing. You may move around as much as the small room allows, but you may not sleep.

Do you take the job?

Who would you save?

P.T. Hylton · Mar 12, 2014 ·

You are in a building that is about to collapse.

There are two possible exits, both an equal distance from you. As you head for the exit, you can warn those you pass along the way and take them with you to safety. Everyone else in the building will surely die.

There are two men near the exit to your left. Every interaction you have had with these two men has been negative. They are regularly rude and abrasive to you. You know nothing about their families or personal lives, but they seem like unhappy people.

There is one man near the exit to your right. Every interaction you have had with him has been positive. He is friendly, upbeat, and quick with a compliment. You know nothing about his family or personal life, but he seems like a happy person.

Do you save the two jerks or the one nice guy?

The (Extreme) Witness Protection Program

P.T. Hylton · Mar 5, 2014 ·

After witnessing a crime, you agree to testify. Due to the high-profile nature of the case, you are forced to join the new-and-improved Witness Protection Program. You are given two odd choices:

1) Move to Norton, KS, and take a new identity.Your immediate family may come with you, but you must cut ties with everyone else. You will work data entry from your home.  Your salary will be exactly the national average. It will be adjusted for the cost of living each year. You are not allowed to change jobs, move to a new town, or make money through any other means. At age 66, you will be allowed to retire,  and you will continue making your national-average income. However you must live in Norton, KS for the rest of your life.

2) You are free to live a normal life, with one small caveat: An armed guard will protect you until the day you die. He is never allowed to stand more than ten feet away from you. You do not have to move or change your name and can stay in contact with your friends and loved ones.

Which do you choose and why?
