Note: This week’s weird question is inspired by Matt Singer’s classic Critic Survey entry, One Movie to Save Humanity.

You discover that aliens plan to destroy the Earth. However, these aliens are not without compassion. They will allow you to play them one single piece of music before they make their final decision. What song do you play them in order to prove the value of humanity. (No pressure.)

This month the commenter who gets the most ‘likes’ each week will win a digital copy of Kick by John L. Monk. Kick is a great book. Some have called it a cross between Quantum Leap and Dexter, and I think that’s an apt description.

In full disclosure, I know John, and he has written about my book on his website. However, I wouldn’t be giving this book away if I didn’t love it.  Check out the 51 5-star reviews on Amazon. Note: You will need an Amazon account in order for me to get you the book if you win.

  1. It might be tempting to Rick-roll them, or you could see they are vulnerable to the Mars Attacks think with country music.

To really blow their socks off I'd try Bach's Cello Suite Number 1. Simple, but beautiful

  2. I will not kneel before Zod. I would play Friday by Rebecca Black and hope for a merciful and quick death.

  3. My first thought was Billie Holliday's "Strange Fruit" but if they worked out what we humans were capable of doing to each other we'd be dead before the end of the first verse. My choice would be Barber's Adagio for strings. As engineers I suspect they'd appreciate the mathematical beauty. As living organisms they couldn't help but be moved by it.

  4. I would go with the ninth symphony. even if they do not like it I can hear it one last time before death 🙂 that or My Favourite Things by John Coltrane. for same reasons as given by Dave

  5. This is a tough one…

First there is always the questionable song of 'It's A Small World' it has the potential of forcing their hand at a quicker destruction….or it could drive them so crazy that they abandon their mission.

If I am looking for compassion purely I might break out Bruce Springsteen's 'The River' after hearing that they will be so depressed and realize they should just let us live in our depression….

Finally and most likely for me….I would say I can't change your mind so I am just gonna get pissed and play something like Bad Religion's 'F#&% Armageddon…. This is Hell!'
